We depart early from Quito and drive to the village of Isinliví. We start our 6 – 7 hour hike at 2900 m (9570 ft) through farms, valleys and hills with spectacular views. A gradual ascent takes us to Chugchillán, at 3160 m (10,428 ft).
This is the more physically demanding day of our trek, ascending more than 1100 m (3630 ft) to the rim of the Quilotoa Volcano at nearly 4,000 m (13,200 ft). We climb a beautiful canyon wall and enjoy the magnificent view of the Quilotoa caldera and its lake below.
The trek today is usually known as the Quilotoa Loop, as we walk along the rim of the crater. The hike involves 3 – 4 hours of continuous ascents and descents on the rocky and lava peaks of the volcano at 4,000 m (13,200 ft). We will return to Quito around 7 pm.
